So what if the land was bought and paid for? Everyone knows you can buy land, but planning permission has to be sought for any building work. You can't even put up a marquee without planning permission from the local authority. You have to submit detailed plans on noise, parking, and impact on the local community along with your architects' detailed drawings. That's the law, all over the UK.

By the same token, a petfood manufacturer who wants to use a commercial building for dogfood production is getting flak from muslims who think they have a right to ban pork from the site. The local authority will hear that case using the standard (ie non-fatuous) criteria, as they should. Decisions are made on rational criteria, with regard to any rational objections. That's the way it should stay.
