Give This Proposal Legs

Securing the oil fields gives a future Iraq a source of revenue. Taking the U.S. out of the civil war might bring Iraqis to their senses. Rather than descending into chaos they might on their own arrive at a power or country sharing mechanism. Saving American lives transfers the debate from that concern to a longer range consideration of what will happen over time.

Pipe's proposal is the best idea I have seen.
