How will the British react to increased presure from Muslims?

Reader comment on item: Piggybacking on Terror

Dr. Pipes may be right when he suggests "the behavior of the British public, that weakest link in the Western chain, suggests that it, at least, may be too confused to resist its Londonistan." But, I suspect he is confusing a confused Labour Government and public intellectuals with "the British public." My impression, from relatives and friends, and not a valid sample, is that as with Hitler the British will take so much and then react very strongly.

It is true most Brits do not like the war in Iraq because they believe they were tricked into it and the troops are not well enough equipped. They also did not like what they saw as the bully tactics of Israel. On the other hand they do not sympathize with Islamic radicals and will jump to Israel's defense if it is attacked.

What he seems to miss is that the British tend to be contrary. In the 1930's there is no doubt most were anti-Semitic and sympathized with the Nazis rhetoric. But, when push came to shove they fought against the Nazis even thought they could easily have sat back.

Finally, and many will not like this, it seems that some Brits are saying that apart from their treatment of the Jews there is a lot to be said for the policy of Ferdinand and Isabella in fifteenth century Spain. After all they faced a similar terrorist threat and overcame it rather quickly by expelling thousands of Muslims. At present such a move is unthinkable, but so too were many actions taken by the British in the past.
