Revisiting The Arabists

Reader comment on item: What Riyadh Buys [in Washington]

Submitted by Linda Staitz Cooke (United States), Dec 11, 2002 at 15:56

Dr. Pipes,

Thank you for another thoughtful, knowledgeable and consistently well written article on this subject matter. I note that you favorably reviewed in the WSJ "The Arabists: The Romance of the American Elite" by Robert Kaplan several years ago. In reading this article I noticed the name Hume Horan. If I remember correctly, Kaplan refers to Horan being recalled from his diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia because the Saudi royalty were uncomforatable with the fact Horan spoke Arabic too well. A very telling observation on Kaplan's part.
