Question for Daniel Pipes

Reader comment on item: Muhammad Ali's "Beautiful Soul"

Submitted by Theodore Shulman (United States), Dec 4, 2005 at 17:54

Dear Dr. Pipes,

where did you get this idea that Parkinson's disease interferes with Ali's ability to make decisions for himself? Parkinson's disease does not affect the patient's ability to think or make decisions for himself. (It is sometimes accompanied by dementia because it is a disease primarily of the elderly, but it does not cause dementia.)

Parkinson's disease does not mean that Ali's later actions are any less reflective of his character than his actions before the onset of PD.

Where did you get this idea that PD interfere's with a patient's ability to make decisions? It doesn't.

Daniel Pipes replies:

I got the idea from the accounts I read of his medical problems. This is not my area of speciality.
