Scholarly Palestine? How about a modern free-thinking Mecca?

Reader comment on item: Pretending There's a Country Called "Palestine"

Dear Dr Pipes,

I found the idea of Rawabi Fellowship Program for Current and Emerging Leaders from Palestine hilarious. I think the (so called) Palestinian leadership only knew how to launch rockets on peaceful cities and pelt stones on the police. Before the Kennedy school can develop serious scholarship among Israeli Muslims, they have to first wean them away from rockets and stones. I think Harvard is already in bed with the stone-pelters and somehow fantasizes that they can develop serious constructive leadership in Palestine.

While the liberal world fantasizes about peaceful Palestine, I would fantasize about Mecca again becoming the free-thinking multi-religion thriving city that it was in the pre-Islamic time. I hope that in this renewed city women will again be free enough to become successful businesswomen and marry men of their own choice (as Khadija was way back).
