"….I regret this – but prefer denial to the alternative."

I do not understand this – how does cowardly acceptance of a fiction, and thus suffering perpetual death by one-thousand cuts, a superior alternative to confronting the truth of manifest evil? (And the inevitable propagation of nuclear weapons promises violence will eventually increase geometrically.)
