If the people are sunni as you have labelled them, they hardly would do anything against the sunnah. Islam owes nobody any apology for whatever it sanctions or disapproves. Your mundane idea of what is good or bad is solely your business. If your mundane sense is really humane, you should have a lot to comment on the western civilisation in this respect. By my own modest sense, even a one-second nikah projects a sane humanity than the animal world called western civilisation
