Reader comment on item: The Rushdie Fatwa 25 Years Later

Submitted by Mark D (United States), Feb 28, 2014 at 17:12

First, that the right of Westerners to discuss, criticize, and even ridicule Islam and Muslims has eroded over the years.

Correct me if I am wrong, Dr. Pipes, but this stems from our leaders expressing respect for religion and telling us to do so. We are taught that.

And, from the way Muslims react whenever there is an "offense", the reaction is a major freakout, so people say chuck it why do it? This serves as a disincentive. In this area, Islam is winning. What do we do about that?

What's more, in the case of Obama or probably any US elected president, we apologize for our citizens insulting Islam.

Daniel Pipes replies:

The spinelessness of leaders is one aspect of the problem, but not the key in my mind. The Left is the basic problem.
