Midge Decter on Rushdie and blasphemy

Reader comment on item: The Rushdie Fatwa 25 Years Later

Submitted by George Jochnowitz (United States), Feb 14, 2014 at 13:37

Midge Decter, in her article "Rushdiad," which appeared in COMMENTARY in June, 1989, wrote, "Salman Rushdie's supporters more than anything else made it clear that they can no longer understand, no longer even imagine, what it means to blaspheme."

It is logical that Decter, who is pro-religion, would object to those who supported Salman Rushdie and were insensitive to his blasphemy. It is nevertheless utterly shocking that she sympathized with Ayatollah Khomeini's need to fight blasphemy. Radical Islam is trying to teach the world what blind faith means. Nobody is learning.
