Reader comment on item: Support Assad

Submitted by Lars Nielsen (Denmark), Apr 12, 2013 at 14:16

Mr. Pipes is of course right. US should consider the old roman proverb of divide and rule. This might lead to a decision to deny the islamists the possibility of taking Syria, even if this means to support Mr. Assad. However, such decision should be clandestine, as it would cause trouble with american citizens, in Congress, and with foreign governments and populations, including allied nations.

Also. it should be considered, that Mr. Assad might lose, even supported by the american goverment. This would make it difficult to control Syria afterwards.

Instead by helping the opposition, US is able to stir up animosities between different groups, thus weakening the opposition. Which is possibly, what the mr. Obama is doing right now .

The great risk to clandestine politics like this is of course to be revealed. But by pretending to support the opposition, that risk should be minimal.
