depends on what meaning of "rock-solid support" is

Reader comment on item: Reflections on Current Hamas-Israel Hostilities

Submitted by Richard Stoecker (United States), Nov 21, 2012 at 12:38

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently said that American support for Israel is "rock-solid." Many remember when her husband Bill, in responding to questions about his misdeeds famously said, "It depends on what the meaning of "is" is. He should have clarified what she meant, considering the record of President Obama regarding Israel and the Palestinians.

Perhaps the former president could have explained that ice is solid until it melts.

Is there any way the Israelis could politely invite her to return to Washington, or to visit some other country--I understand the Moroccans sometimes act as mediators--perhaps the Moroccans could invite her for a visit.

As for President Obama's statement that Israel has the right to defend itself, if he believes that, why doesn't he get out of the way and let that unfold if it is deemed necessary--if a cease-fire is the best thing, cannot the leaders of Israel arrange that without her "help?"
