Peace in our time?

Reader comment on item: What Is Israel's Next Move In The New Middle East?

Submitted by Abraham Irwin (United States), May 5, 2011 at 10:12

In the short to medium term, you are probably correct that "A shift to the political realm could transform the conflict to Israel's detriment." However, since Israel can not in the long term hope to defeat the one billion plus Muslims, it is only through the political arena that peace can be achieved.

To the extent that the Arab Awakening foreshadows a decline in nationalism and an increase in secularism, there is hope that the Muslim world will follow the same path as the West. Seventy five years ago no one would have believed that France and Germany would accepted a peaceful relationship within the E.U.

We can hope that peace will arrive when the younger generation of Arabs start to realize that it is in their interest to cooperate with Israel.
