PerspectiveReader comment on item: There Are No Moderates: Dealing with Fundamentalist Islam Submitted by John (United States), Apr 10, 2011 at 17:55 Dear Jack, Historically, more people have been converted to Christianity in Latin America by military imposition than by free choice. Furthermore, there are many passages in the Bible calling for slaughterings and other terrible acts. See, Mr. Jack, that makes all three Abrahamic religions violent. But very few in the country argue Christianity is violent. I would purport that it is a desperate socio-economic situation that creates the fanaticism we see in certain Muslims. It is much like the fanaticism we saw in Communists frustrated by unfair socio-economics during the tumultuous transition to the industrial age. Many a religion and ideology have seeds of violence written into them. The question is what brings them out of certain religions/ideologies at certain times.
