Monsters In the Mirror

Reader comment on item: In Europe, Remorse Has Turned to Masochism

Fascinating. Two points come to mind: I'm aware of the terrible things America has done with its great power, yet I recognize our greatest accomplishment as monumental: (1) countermanding the Soviet monster yet at the same time (2) breaking the vicious cycle of World War. Good for us. But in outreach to Islam, how can we take credit for preventing the USSR from destroying the world if Muslims see Russia as their own global champion, e.g., keeping Israel from storming Cairo and Damascus in Yom Kippur?

Secondly, I won't be lectured by Europe, and frankly I don't care about their opinion of the U.S. The continent that invented Communism, Nazism, Colonialism and World War needs to keep its opinions to itself for at least another hundred years. I wouldn't say Europe has 'vanquished its own monsters.' They outsourced their defense to the U.S. because they couldn't be trusted with armies anymore; otherwise, they'd have killed themselves. And they were driven out of their colonies involuntarily.
