Shell and ING, two dutch companies, are both within the top10 of the largest companies worldwide. Rotterdam is the major sea-port in Europe. NL has (at least one of) the lowest unemployment rate in the EU. As for democracy the dutch have local institutions that manage the water. Keeping the country dry by pumping away the rainwater that is. These institutions have extra local elections, probably unique on the planet. As for culture and society they represent protestant europe. Making money is the key interest in dutch society.
