Mike, America does have security personnel in some places like Frankfurt. There are still plenty of troops in Germany. You are right it needs more people to secure the US, most important by checking people on non-us airports flying into the us. On the other hand I accept your point. It raises the question wether or not commercial air traffic is worth keeping up on a peacetime level when a country is at war. The reality at least in my bit of the western world is that the government has all the resources it needs to collect parking fines. The logic is this, we are willing to overlook the explosives on the passenger seat, but it is 50eur for parking your car in this spot, pay cash before it explodes.
