So, which account is correct?

Good research on your part; I was unaware of this account from Shabak. The key passage reads:

I drew my account from an article of the reconstructed dialogue by Neil C. Livingstone and David Halevy in the Washingtonian magazine, May 1989. I do not know enough to judge which of the two accounts is more accurate.
