Reader comment on item: Obama and Israel, Into the Abyss

Submitted by John W Mcginley (United States), Jul 21, 2009 at 11:08

Full disclosure; I supported Barack Obama in the election of 2008.

I am surprised and disheartened by President Obama's tunnel vision on these matters. His mindset is not much different from the disasterous "Oslo" orientation which plagued the whole Israel/Palestine situation thorughout the nineties. I am disappointed in his Chief of Staff. I thought he would have helped Obama from falling into the dead-ends of the past.

I suspect that the Netanyahu Government will maintain its present positions, which are reasonable. President Obama will skulk away from the whole matter and by the end of his first term (which may be his last) there will be no resolution of this matter. No resolution is better than a stupid resolution.

The wild card on this, of course, is the nuclear situation realtive to Iran. If Iran plays Obama for a sucker for too long, I suspect Israel will be forced to take pre-emptive action on its own. In so doing Israel will suffer significant and immediated retaliation and there will be much suffering and death. The prepetrators of such retaliation will suffer even more from the hand of Israel. The wild-card here is of course, Putin. If he sides with Iran and threatens Israel, Israel may be trumped given what appears to be Obama's lack of spine. All in all, Obama is becoming a player on the world seen who becomes more and more irrelevant with each month.
