Reader comment on item: [The Khadrs:] Canada's First Family of Terrorism

Submitted by Alexander (Canada), Mar 17, 2004 at 13:33

I am a Muslim Canadian professor of literature and I read Daniel Pipes because his position is a reasoned and scholarly one. And his position is free of Romantic ideological cant. He may appear to be extreme in certain specifics, but at least he is speaking out on topics that political correctness does muddle and muffle in our society.

Canada has been called 'the spoiled brat of the Western world,' and I think this is essentially correct. But more than this, Canadians are very anti-American (a knee-jerk reaction base in an inferiority comples), and this negative self-fashioning seems to bleed out in an anti-semitism that is systemic to the federal liberal governemnt and the government funded media (the CBC).

I cannot remember the last time I saw or read a news story on Israel that was not subtly slanted toward the Palestinians. It is the official policy of the CBC that the word 'terrorist' must never be used when referring to Islamic militants, because it is 'too strong a word.' When it comes to the Middle East, Canadians like other peoples around the world, are eager to associate Israel with America, and the result is a creeping antisemitism in the public arena.

It should not be surprising that bureaucrats within the federal liberal governement seem a little too lenient in dealing with Islamic miltants. But here's the rub, Canadians are political puppies. If enough people (of all ethnicities) complain about Canadian actions and words, Canadian public opinion will change, and quickly. Though not, perhaps, without leaving a puddle on the floor.
