Rick gets it exactly right -- on two vital points

Reader comment on item: Bush's Middle East Hopes [and His Failures]
in response to reader comment: A "democracy" is only as good or as bad as the people

Submitted by Charles Martel (United States), Jan 22, 2008 at 11:22

First: Democracy depends on the demographics -- a group that shares a horrible oppressive value set like Islam will vote for a horrible, oppressive government. The neocon eggheads advising the Idiot in Chief don't understand that rather elemental point.

Second: Islam, as a religion, has a transcendent staying power that no ideology has ever had.

Rick says it is easier to shed an ideology than a religion and that is a very obvious point -- there is lingering Communist residue in Russia, and a smattering of Nazis in Germany, but neither country could be described as Communist or Nazi, respectively.
