re the KGIA taxpayer funded Madrassa Schooling

Reader comment on item: Stop the NYC Madrassa

Submitted by Jascha Kessler (United States), Aug 15, 2007 at 18:58

Dear Chancellor Klein:

I am a born and raised and college-educated New Yorker. I have lived in California since 1961, when I left the State to join UCLA. One underlying reason, perhaps, was that I could see that New Yorkers do not think very clearly. It may be that Los Angeles County folks dont think much at all, in the proper sense of the word; but that is beside the point.

It seems to me fantastic, especially after 9/11, and the current repeated Al Qaeda alarms for terror bombs, like last week's alert, that the City's government should allow a Madrassa, Arabic-speaking yet! to be funded by taxes.

Were it on the model of the venerable Lycée Française, one branch of which my own children attended in Los Angeles, as well as in Rome, private education in Arabic would be per force allowable constitutionally, whether terror-oriented or not, as the old School for Ethical Culture is, or Yeshivas galore. But the KGIA is certainly wrong in principal and practice, as a public school entity.

Frankly, one must ask, Have you all who permitted it to open or be established simply lost your wits and minds? It must appear so, to any disinterested observer, even one from the far West Coast.

Sincerely,
Jascha Kessler
