Should outsiders try to influence the hiring or tenuring of university faculty?

Absolutely. Freedom of speech and freedom of association should be on an equal footing. Students' freedom to attend classes is more curtailed than a professsor's freedom to indoctrinate.

Would anyone stand by while a licensed physician openly advocated a medical procedure which would more than likely kill a patient, a procedure based solely on that physician's obviously undocumented whim?
