I once happened across a small little booklet (first published in the 60s) entitled "Jewish Values" (by Louis Jacobs). He wrote a chapter on martyrdom (I have a copy of the second edition, published in the 80s). Jacobs was writing long before the notion of Islamic suicide bombers came into vogue. I weep when I consider how far the world has descended -- morally (again, "Thanks Islam!") The "exit strategy" of Islam (and to claim for themselves "martyrdom" is a grotesque perversion of the word) reflects also the polar opposite of Judaism (perhaps also reminiscent of the "entrance" strategy into Islam.) Although Jacobs may have his critics, I think his chapter on martrys is well worth re-reading (especially in light of today's world.)
