Mainstreaming the Unholy AllianceReader comment on item: [William Blum and] Al-Qaeda's Leftist Brigade Submitted by Lee D. Cary (United States), Jan 24, 2006 at 12:28 The William Blum's are always among us in the US. When UBL quotes Blum, much to Blum's pleasure, it's only a calendar difference from what must have been Adolf's appreciation for support from Lucky Lindberg and Ambassador Kennedy, or Ho's affection for Senator Wayne Morris and Jane Fonda. It seems a bit worse now that before, what with the strident partisan name-calling from mainstream politicos. But then, one need only review what Lincoln faced to see that not much has changed in that venue either. One year after Pearl Harbor, TIME magazine was criticizing FDR for not have a plan to win the war. In the immortal words of Kurt Vonnegut--Hi Ho. The freedoms we enjoy give the educated foolish among us an opportunity to claim the stage-left of public discourse. Or, as in the case of a Pat Robertson, the stage-right. The sad thing is that when Mr. Blum eventually goes the way of all flesh, his most lasting legacy (lasting probably not very long) is likely to be that his book was endorsed by an international mass murderer. Who would wish for that legacy? Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
