Today's election of the reactionary Mayor of Tehran to the Iranian Presidency will test Mr Gerecht's theory to destruction. The mood among Iranians is strikingly similar to that of Eastern Europe's 'entropy' in the late 1980s. No thinking person believes in the official ideology anymore. The moderate majority made a mockery of the system by going on strike.
And there is no Islamic Soviet Union to offer fraternal intervention.
In a sane world both Pipes and Gerecht would be right. Having seen the results of Islamic Fascism in power in Kabul and Tehran, the faithful should recoil in horror from any repetition.
But how long and through how many examples did it take the world to learn the lesson about Communism?
