Reader comment on item: Radical Islam as Its Own Antidote[, Argues Reuel Gerecht]

Dear Mr. Pipes:
I agree with you whole heartedly that allowing the extremists come to power as a way of self-destroying themself is a folly. For more than 26 years the mullahs have been in power in Iran and the cost to the civilized society not mention to the Iranian people has been tremendous. US and Israel lost a reliable ally, about a million people got killed in Iran Iraq war, Islamic Jihad is creating a great obstacle to peace as a pawn in the hands of Iranians and Syrians, the mullahs have hands in many international terrosist activities, have caused numerous incidences of mischief in the world and relegated the Jewish poputation in Iran to a second class citizens fearing for their lives and properties every day.

There is no short term solution. They should be kept on a short leash until such time that gradually the local population gets tired of their tyranny and revolt against them.

In the case of so called secular dictatorships such as Egypt, one should not make the same mistake that Jimmy Carter made in Iran . Due to the fact that there are no liberal institutions in those countries and the fact that the only organized insitution is the religion, they will be assured of winning and thus replacing a forward looking dictatorship with a backward looking one.
