Döner murders, the not quite new Neo-Nazis, the border of Western Europe

Reader comment on item: Jihad or Criminality?
in response to reader comment: The German way

Ianus, these police directives reflect the actual political murders committed in Germany. Recently law-enforcement revealed a Neo-Nazi terror cell that had been overlooked out of negligence. Over a time span of years they killed Turks. The press labelled this the Döner-Murders.

To my knowledge, there exists no islamic group who are active as violent jihadis in Germany. Today the actual threat is the far right. Would the police brand common criminals as Turks or Muslims the police would promote the Neo-Nazis agenda. Whether they want it or not, the police chooses sides with the information they release. On the other hand, overlooking the ethnicity of the victims in the Döner-Murders delayed the detection of the Neo-Nazi cell. I see no clear right or wrong here.

I conclude that wise police and press policies depend on delicate details of society and a thorough understanding of the crimes in the context of the particalur country at a particular given time.

Public sentiment turning against muslims or immigrants is a serious matter. There is an invisible line, somewhere in East Germany. When I cross it, the Döner Kebab shops all disappear. No food after midnight. It is the native East-German population who scare those oriental business men away for no good reason. East Germany has no significant experience with immigrants. This is the true border of Western Europe. Those oriental immigrants are characteristic of Western-Europe. The majority of Easter Europeans coming to the West are surprised by this feature.

The police and the press have a huge responsibility how they shape public sentiments. Sometimes saying the right thing makes people understand the wrong thing. It seems to me, that as soon as the jihadist nature of a criminal act is established, the ethnicity of the criminal is obsolete. I would not publish ethnicity as a mere indicator prior to further investigation.
