Reader comment on item: Egypt's Sham Election

Submitted by Dave (United States), Dec 8, 2011 at 11:25

I'm actually relieved by this interview. I would rather have Colonel Blimp and his cronies running Egypt than the rabid ideologues of some seventh century jihad revival. Keep in mind that historically, reform in Islamic countries has tended to come from the elites - such as Kemalism - and not the populace, which is often ignorant and reactionary. The obsession in the West with democracy in the Mideast has been an enabler of religious reaction in countries such as Iran, Turkey and many others.

In any case, turning to Islamic religious extremism as a solution to real problems is a disaster. The West needs to realize that reform of Islamic culture is a lost cause and instead needs to look out for its own interests.
