Reader comment on item: Why Chris Christie Will Never Be President of the United States

Submitted by Richard M. Pious (United States), Aug 6, 2011 at 21:40

Mr. Pipes you are way off base. Governor Christie is standing up to the most bigoted and fear mongering elements of the Republican Party. He is doing it at great political cost to himself. You are right that the "base" of the /GOP won't soon forget what he said, or how he characterized this nonsensical fear that Sharia Law will come to the US. That has about as much chance as Kashrut becoming a legal norm in this country. Lots of people, by the way, serve on boards of organizations that are doing things that they may not know about, or of which they would not approve.

Evidently this fellow that Christie appointed managed to get dismissals of a lot of ill-considered cases brought in the aftermath of 9/11. As Christie points out, such representation should be applauded and not condemned. Effective representation of defendants is as vital as energetic prosecution of suspects: you need both to make our legal system a true system of justice. (I write as someone who was an American Jewish volunteer for Israel's kibbutz harvest in June '67, so I am well aware of the difference between a significant threat and one that is overblown.)
