Reader comment on item: On Biden in Israel

Submitted by Mladen Andrijasevic (Israel), Mar 11, 2010 at 07:19

I have thought until now that Danny Ayalon, Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister, was unmatched when he summoned the Turkish ambassador to Israel Ahmet Oguz Celikkol, and seated him in a lower chair to humiliate him. Apparently, Vice President Biden surpassed Danny Ayalon when he showed up an hour and a half late for dinner at PM Benjamin Netanyahu's home. Kindred spirits indeed.

This has become surreal. The nuclear threat from Iran is becoming more imminent by the day and what is VP Biden spending his time on? Denouncing the building of new homes in Jerusalem and insulting Israel's PM. Is all this really more important than the possibility of a nuclear war between Iran and Israel? Historians of the future will have a problem understanding this period in history. They will probably ask why wasn't anyone devoting any attention to the West's foremost scholar on Islam, Bernard Lewis, who said the following about Iran: "In this context, mutual assured destruction, the deterrent that worked so well during the Cold War, would have no meaning. At the end of time, there will be general destruction anyway. What will matter will be the final destination of the dead--hell for the infidels, and heaven for the believers. For people with this mindset, MAD is not a constraint; it is an inducement." http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110008768
