The war effort in Iraq is a big waste. Better he would have been allowed to keep Kuwait and in return made into a covert ally of USA and Israel and the three should have fixed Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Saudi Arabia with his help. Bad as he was and is, he (secular, progressive, respecting women's rights) was the best in the arab and the muslim world. This great opportunity was lost by jews, christians and USA in the 1990's. Now the USA should get out of Irak immediately and wait an year or two and then implement such a plan. Syria+Lebanon was and is a far greater danger to Israel, jews and christians than Saddam's Irak was.
And Pakistan is a venomous scorpion in the sleeve. An Afghanistan under the soviets was certainly better (not best but better). But rabid anti-communism made the dollar-greedy Reaganites blind to this fact.
Washington is ruled by political duds - since decades.
