A challenge to Iranian voters

Reader comment on item: Iran's Representative in the Knesset - Haneen Zuabi

Submitted by abhi (United States), May 31, 2009 at 14:32

Dear Dr Pipes: No matter what we feel about the Iranian President Ahmadinejad, we cannot deny that he is democratically elected. I do not know enough about the authenticity of overall democratic process in Iran but what ever democratic process exists in Iran, is an encouraging signal for the free world.

Through this letter I throw a challenge to all Iranian voters and to people in every other Islamic country: If Israel can elect Haneen Zuabi to its parliament, if the America can elect a Barack Obama with his Islamic roots as president, if India can vote against a right-wing party and for a secular party (minority rights is the main agenda item on whose platform), then why cannot you throw out Ahmadenejad out of power?

If I can earn even one vote for a moderate candidate in Iran, I will feel well compensated for writing this letter.
