Of course, this doesn't explain everything. Jihadist ideology and methodologies have been greatly influenced by modern thought both Islamic and Western, not to mention historic events.

But if Geert Wilders' goal was to raise people's awareness, I believe that goal would have been defeated had the movie attempted a more complex analysis.
