Reader comment on item: Middle East Debate: Should Washington Actively Promote an Israeli-Palestinian Peace Settlement?

Submitted by Robert Breslauer (United States), May 12, 2003 at 00:53

Dear Ambassador Martin Indyk-

Throughout Milwaukee, indeed probably the United States and elsewhere, is that only a very tiny fraction of the population believes that the following statement is true: "If the Palestinians stop all the violence, Israel's policy would be that NOT ONE solder should fire ONE BULLET." Nevertheless, IT IS TRUE. My hope is for Sharon to state this in every speech - Indeed, it would be VG if all peace advocates would state this or its equivalent in each presentation.

Granted there must be much calming on both sides for peace. The biggest deterrent to that, is the incitement from the PA leadership.

Both debaters had strong points. Starting a peace prccess while these four terrorist clans want to kill Israelis, does not seem timely. Dr Pipes holds the trump cards here. Peace will not be achieved unless and until Palestinians accept Jews and recognize the Jewish State of Israel. I can't believe that there could be any other first step towards peace. There's no point in talking without it. And, yes, by WRITTEN VOTE, the Palestinian Charter must be changed also.
Shalom, Robert Breslauer, Milwaukee, WI
