Why do we have to acept Islam as a religion?

After some study of the history and methodologies of Islam I have come to the conclusion almost two years ago that perhaps Islam is not so much a religion as it is a political system using religious language. Somehow I found this thought to be liberating. Just what is the difference between the two concepts.

By the measure of Islam I could say that I have had a vision and god spoke to me certain words. If I get enough followers and my following lasts long enough does that constitute a religion? I see no great overiding beneficial philosophy in Islam. Nothing that adds to the lifting up of the human condition.
