Naomi, There are no Moderate Muslims, Its like looking for a moderate Nazi or a moderate member of the KKK. Islam demands of its believers to accept that Mohamed was the last prophet sent by an unseen God and the quran as the literal word of this God (Allah). One has to believe absolutely, unconditionally (no if's and but's), all that is in the quran, the hadiths and siras as absolute truths. If a Muslim does not do so, he is considered an Apostate, for which the penalty is death. Period.

What one considers as Moderate Islam in the West has two faces. Internally, they are a racist theocratic and absolutist political people which (uses fiery rhetoric to) glorify terrorism and actively recruits to its (fascist) cause. Externally, when interviewed or speaking to non muslins , they express themselves in the most anodyne (not likely to offend or arouse tensions) and uncontroversial terms and are usually unchallenged.

There is an Islamic teaching called taqiyya. Taqiyya means deception or concealing and disguising one's beliefs and intentions to fool the adversary. According to Muhammad all forbidden things become permissible if they are to be used for the advancement of Islam. ...
