Reader comment on item: CAIR: Islamists Fooling the Establishment

Submitted by Rachel (United States), Mar 10, 2006 at 14:55

Many good facts and strong arguments but one that I found problematic:

There is nothing wrong and everything right in advising a group to know its rights to refuse entry to one's home and have an attorney present if being questioned by law enforcement authorities; these are basic rights afforded every citizen and the latter is part of the Miranda warning police are required to give any suspect. In addition, hate crimes should be reported to the police or FBI; it is up to law enforcement to determine in the course of an investigation whether or not a hate crime has actually been committed and act accordingly.

I frankly found it surprising that you cite this as problematic behavior on the part of CAIR. It can only have the effect of weakening your other, valid points and, worse, implying that such rights are not legitimate, when they are.

Daniel Pipes replies:

Legally, CAIR is on solid ground. Politically, it is not. Demanding the police help protect Muslims but wanting Muslims not to help the police is not acceptable.
