Reader comment on item: [Bureaucratic Leftism and] Globalthink's Perils

Submitted by Sheerahkahn (United States), Sep 24, 2002 at 14:26

As was in the beginning with the tower of Babel, so it is today with the Tower of the United Nations, the unity of the peoples of this world. The push for a united world, under a United Nations leadership program would be called a bureaucratic wasteland of ineptitude at best, the breeding ground for tyranny of world wide proportions at worst. I submit to you this thought that should summon the more ominious portents of this effort, The Roman Empire.

Rome sought and accomplished her goals in a very short time period, and all under the banner of Pax Romana, the peace of Rome. Rome's peace came at the tip of her Legions, and all who claimed independence from her felt the weight of her wrath. Rome's peace came in barrels of blood donated unwillingly by the subjugated peoples of her empire.

Rome started out as an oligarchy, evolved into a Republic, became a triumvirate which led, ultimately, to an imperial seat under one ruler who claimed, with the help of his flatterers, to be a god. History is replete with examples of power hungry men, and women, who sought power not only over flesh, but over the mind as well. The U.N. for all its vaunted possibilities, and potentialities is not immune to the caress of absolute power, or the possible centralization of power to a group, or, God forbid, an individual.

Unfortunately, the world will burn before we ever admit it to ourselves because so many of our own people are enamoured with the romance of a United World they gloss over the horrible possibilities that such a world wide institutionalized government could unleash.

I fear the ascendancy to power of the United Nations in the world will be the undoing of everything our ancestors sought when they came to the United States, the pursuit of life without fear of our neighbor, liberty to express our thoughts without retribution, and the pursuit of happiness without fear that it would be taken away at the whim of a group or individual. Our choice here in the U.S is freedom of the individual which is what the United States stands for, and that Freedom to choose is what the world, under the U.N. wants to take away.
