Dear Dr Pipes

, Your statement "Palestinians are on the wrong track and will not get off it until the outside world demands better of them" needs to be repeated seven billion times every day. Even if a group of people have been wronged in the past, it must be required of them that they conduct themselves with non-violence and responsibility, and they provide to others a forum where others can negotiate with them. And, they must curb the rhetoric of hate. It is not true just of the, so called, Palestinians.

The entire Islamic world on the one hand is hypersenistive to the (real and perceived) past injustices and on the other provides no democratic platform on which sensible dialog can take place. More and more people are now realizing that from southern Philippines to Northern Nigeria predominent aspects of Islamic life is the absence of sensible democratic platforms and the rhetoric of revenge and hate. You are absolutely right when you say that the outside world must demand better of the Palestinians and other Islamic people and societies. We value democracy, freedom, and mutual acceptance. We must demand these things from Islamic nations every day of the week.
