Why ISIS and Co. Must Be Ahistorical

Reader comment on item: The Acute Danger of Iraqi Dams

ISIS's assaults against people and infrastructure form part of a larger picture of anarchy. It's hard to believe that such behavior has a very long past in Islamic history, since the infighting and destruction wrought by ISIS and groups like it would have resulted in the conquest of Islamic countries centuries ago by opportunistic outside invaders. Of course, there were always extremists, but to this extent? As it stands now, the Islamic countries are so weakened by internal divisions that such an invasion could yet take place, and the invader won't be a nation builder.
