Big Dam Problem

Reader comment on item: The Acute Danger of Iraqi Dams

Submitted by Dave (Canada), Aug 3, 2014 at 19:04

The idea that we can just ignore Iraq and Syria is feasible only so long as there is a balance of power, or terror in this case. The danger has always been that the balance could tip decisively in favor of some malevolent force and that could now be happening.

While ISIS is useful in preventing Iran from totally dominating Iraq and Syria, and could still be a useful foil to Iran, I don't like the news that they're eclipsing the friendly Kurds, capturing oil fields for revenue and now the Mosul Dam (eek!). The big powers may yet have to go in with guns blazing. It's enough to make you long for the days of Western colonialism.
