Why Israel supports Kurdistan ?

Dear Dr. Pipes ,

I would love to know your viewpoint on whether Israel is right to proclaim her support for an independent Kurdistan.

The Israeli policy has been for the last 60 years to support non-Arab countries against Arabs. It started of with Turkey , Ethiopia and Iran. Now two of the three countries have perhaps the worst anti-Israel sentiments after all these decades of effort.

Kurds are overwhelmingly Muslims (remeber Saladin ?) Israel appearently has good ties with only a few politicians like Barzani and so forth. These leaders like Barzani are fedualistic clan-based tribal leaders and do not have any ideological backings such enjoyed by Israel's adversaries in Hamas , AKP or Iran.

So my concern is that Kurdistan could become another anti-Israel entity if an Islamic popular movement there topples the Barzanis.

What are your thoughts on this viewpoint of mine ?

Take care.

Debanjan

Daniel Pipes replies:

You seem to think that if Israel has good relations with a country, it will turn on it. I don't think there is a causal relation here.

I favor Kurdish independence and am glad the government of Israel concurs. I wish other states did too.
