The evisceration of America's armed forces is best understood as a cyclical phenomenon, following the overall 40-year cycle of American politics and economics. Consider that the 1930s and 1970s were also the heyday of American retreat, isolationism and military decay, along with economic stagnation, high unemployment and profligate, interventionist economic policies. As the film says, "it is the doom of men that they forget"...
