What will Russia's policy be?

Reader comment on item: Cyprus on the World Stage

Great article. It will be interesting to see how Russia sees her interests here. Will she support an Israeli-Cypriot alliance, with a view towards curtailing Turkey's projection of power in the Eastern Mediterranean, as her historical antagonisms with Turkey would suggest? Or will she oppose this alliance, as a counterwieght to American and European Union policy, with a view towards fostering an alliance with Turkey? This second policy, if successful, may lead to the prying of Turkey away from NATO and the elimination of the important US airbase at Incirlik.
