What really islamized Turkey

Reader comment on item: Islamist Turkey Overreaches

Submitted by metacristi (United Kingdom), Jun 18, 2010 at 08:12

islam remained very popular among turkish population even during all these years of secularization and, more or less, modern democracy. No surprise its resurgence, in fact we should have always expected that not so commited muslims will 'remember' one day that islam is the eternal and literal world of allah and that secularism and modern democracies are alien structures to islam (unfortunately islam is still not reformed in non trivial ways, what is needed is something like this: http://reformislam.org).

However if the incentives which brought secularism in Turkey and the partial modernization of other muslim dominated countries had still been of actuality it is unlikely that the evident shift towards political islam in the last decades would have happened...Sadly the main cause for this is the western appeasement of islam, Daniel Greenfield has an excellent article about this on his blog: http://sultanknish.blogspot.com/2010/06/how-european-tolerance-islamized-turkey.html. Although it seems discriminatory the open critcism of islam, at an academic level, can actually help; if we want real muslim moderates (http://muslimsagainstsharia.blogspot.com/2008/01/what-is-moderate-muslim.html), we have to try at least to show them that islam is not so perfect and that sharia, at least partial, in the Constitution (or influencing legislation) can never 'work'.
