Islam & Democracy Do Not Mix

Reader comment on item: Iraq's Cosmetic Election

Submitted by Mike Ramirez (United States), Mar 9, 2010 at 13:18

As the article correctly states:

"Tehran has aspired to seize effective control of Iraq since the U.S.-led overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003. With many levers at hand, from mosques to schools to militias to politicians, the Iranian despots are well placed to inherit the country."

The "Democratic process" in Iraq is only a vote for which sect wins the majority to control the country; Sunni or Shi'a. It is not a vote for forming a Western style system of democracy for the simple reason that Islam and a Western-type Democracy are not compatible in a truly Muslim region.
