Reader comment on item: Wasted U.S. Spending in Iraq (and Afghanistan): $53 billion and Counting

Well, it seems that US money is being poured down more and more ratholes, foreign and domestic, than ever before.

Surely there must be a cadre of engineers somewhere in Iraq. The Ba'athist state managed to pump the oil as needed.

I suspect that another big part of the problem was that Sodom Insane, like all good long-lasting dictators, managed that any political talent that might possibly compete with him went six-feet under. This meant that once the Ba'ath regime was ousted, the rebuilding of Iraqi political culture would have been a matter for the long, long haul.
