Reader comment on item: Muslim Hours at Municipal Swimming Pools in the West

Submitted by ABCDEFG (United States), Jan 21, 2008 at 01:51

Others may have half the knowledge of the muslim culture but you only seem to have half the knowledge of the swimming pool situation at hand. You need to realize that municipal--public pools are paid by the average citizen's tax money, which means there shall be no accomodations made for a particular religion or a party unless they have paid to reserve the pools (if municipal pool allows for that option). If muslims really want to swim that bad, then why not create a private fund for a muslim only pool? No one cares about private property as long as their tax money isn't involved.

Swimming isn't a right that muslims need desperately. It isn't as important as free speech or the right to freely practice what you believe--although, I understand that such facilities must be extended to everyone, but not when it will discriminate against non-muslims. You also have to understand that in a western society, if skin is such an issue then you will have trouble doing alot of things such as going to the beach or swimming or whatever because you cannot follow a religion that strips certain rights and then demand those rights from a secular society. Sorry, doesn't work that way.

You must understand that if Islam demands such strict isolation and segregation of sex, then get your own private pool and mandate your islamic laws there where non-muslim tax payers don't have any involvement.
