Reader comment on item: Muslims "Lagging Behind"

Submitted by Iftikhar Ahmad (United Kingdom), Dec 26, 2006 at 04:27

Salaam, British Muslims are not doing well academically because they have been mis-educated and de-educated by the state schools. Migrant Muslims are bilingual and they need state funded Muslim schools with bilingual teachers as role model. If their mother tongue is ignored than they are not going to learn a second language. Their education must be started in their mother tongues, and gradually they should be exposed to English language.

Daniel Pipes replies:

Mr. Ahmad writes from the London School of Islamics.

I am no specialist in these matters, but from what I understand, immersion in the host country language leads to the greatest success, not diversions into bilingual education.
